facebook-downFacebook organic reach for fan and business pages has been declining for a few months, ever since Facebook  issued a bulletin in November 2014 titled “An Update to News Feed: What it Means for Businesses“.

I’ve seen the most dramatic change over the past fews weeks during March 2015 when business/fan page posts are reaching between 5 and 10% percent of fans!

Facebook says….“One of the main reasons people come to Facebook is to see what’s happening in their News Feeds. Our goal with News Feed has always been to show people the things they want to see. When people see content that’s relevant to them, they’re more likely to be engaged with News Feed, including stories from businesses.”

Yes Facebook – people made the choice to see those posts – that’s why they “liked” the page!

Facebook says….“People told us they wanted to see more stories from friends and Pages they care about, and less promotional content.

Yes Facebook – nobody likes to much promotional and spammy content. BUT people can “like” a company and choose to NOT see their posts – there is an opt out for that!
Facebook says….“Now we’re bringing new volume and content controls for promotional posts, so people see more of what they want from Pages.

Yes Facebook – we agree BUT if a business page is blasting too many irrelevant, spammy posts they will be punished by their fans and lose their fan base so we don’t really need Facebook to do that for us! (Is Facebook doing this to make room for more real estate on the news feed for paid advertising. After all there is a limit to the number of posts people will read – even on Facebook.)

In the past month I have seen relevant, professional, informative posts with high quality images not showing up on fan news feeds – an alarming number of them – so I find their reasoning somewhat misleading. I received two calls this week from my own clients thinking their Facebook page was broken. My clients are getting emails and calls from their own clients informing them that they are not receiving posts but some of their friends are.

I have been frustrated as well after investing my time in discovering pages that share great content, all of a sudden this past week I started getting posts from only about 5% of those pages.

Facebook is now forcing business owners to pay to have their posts promoted. So doesn’t that contradict their position? Now people will be seeing MORE promotional content. Most small business owners don’t have the budget to pay to have non promotional content promoted.  So what is going to show up on news feeds? More promotional content than ever!

Yes Facebook now you are pushing promotional content on my newsfeed!

The funny thing is that it took years for business to embrace Facebook as a serious marketing platform and now even small business owners are including Facebook in their advertising budgets. My clients see the value and are getting buzz with paid posts along with posting great content for organic reach – but their fan base is not seeing most of the good content – only the promotional ads!

Stay tuned for my next post about how to survive and prosper on Facebook in 2o15.
